  • Introduction.

Heavy Oil Solutions’ patented wellhead partial upgrading with integrated water treatment enables global cost competitiveness for Canadian SAGD oil sand production.  Reacting bitumen and produced water emulsions under supercritical conditions, producers can simultaneously make synthetic oil equivalent to Argus Mars and either boiler-ready water or formation-ready steam.  Since upgrading is incorporated with steam production, total operating cost and power requirements are improved compared to current SAGD.  This is accomplished by treating the oil and water with a single unit operation while eliminating a majority of de-oiling, chemical feed and water treatment steps.  Hydrogen is generated in-situ without expensive catalysts or reactor beds, eliminating the need for diluent and downstream hydrotreating.  This alone reduces full-cycle greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions 37%.  Over time, moving to modularized, single skid operation will allow for surface processing at the well pad and faster completions.  With relatively low capital cost per flowing barrel and significant netback improvement, the wellhead-process can be retrofitted into existing SAGD central processing facilities.

    Presentation details.

Speaker: Steve Yarbro, Founder & CTO

    – Technology overview

    – Comparison to current practices

    – Pilot results

    – Next steps & how to get involved

    – Open discussion

    Background.

Heavy Oil Solutions’ (“HOS”) patented technology is based on successful supercritical water oxidation processing applications developed for Los Alamos National Laboratory.  After several years of benchscale development and successfully operating a small pilot for over a year, HOS is now scaling their process up and moving into commercial demonstrations.  The company is in active discussions for retrofitting commercial demonstrations into existing SAGD facilities.  HOS can build, own and operate and will potentially bring it’s own capital to the table for this purpose.
